A Summer of Growth and Learning

This summer, Joshua Edson (pictured right) had the opportunity to intern at Adams Brown in the tax department, gaining invaluable insights and hands-on experience. Reflecting on his time, Joshua shared several key lessons that stand out for anyone starting in this field.

1. Ask Questions
One of the most significant lessons Joshua learned is the importance of asking questions.

“When I first started, I was often confused about various tax-related topics. I quickly realized that asking questions, even if they seemed basic, was important for my understanding and growth.”

Everyone he spoke to, from seasoned professionals to fellow interns, emphasized that there’s a big difference between learning about something in theory and actually doing the job. Taking detailed notes and seeking clarification whenever needed helped bridge this gap and gain a deeper understanding of the tasks.

2. Time Management
Time management is another skill Joshua honed during his internship.

“In a fast-paced environment like Adams Brown, managing time effectively is essential to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks efficiently. I learned to prioritize assignments, organize my workload and stay focused.”

These skills not only helped him deliver high-quality work but also ensured he could balance various responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Meet New People
One of the joys of Joshua’s internship was the opportunity to meet and connect with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience.

“Building these relationships provided me with different perspectives on the work we do and helped me understand the broader impact of our efforts.”

Networking with professionals in the field not only enriched his experience but also opened doors for future opportunities. Joshua noted, “You never know who you will meet or when you will cross paths again after your internship.”

4. Attention to Detail
In the realm of tax preparation, attention to detail is paramount. Joshua learned that every detail of a tax return must be meticulously checked to ensure accuracy and compliance with tax laws.

“Small mistakes can have significant consequences, so thoroughness and precision are essential.”

This experience taught him the importance of double-checking his work and being vigilant about even the smallest details to prevent errors.

Joshua Edson’s internship at Adams Brown helped equip him with practical skills and valuable lessons that will shape his future career. He is grateful for the opportunity to learn from such a supportive and knowledgeable team and looks forward to applying these lessons in his future endeavors.
